The following is a statement from Deborah Smolover, Executive Director of America Forward and a Managing Partner at New Profit, and Tulaine Montgomery, Partner, New Profit’s Pathways Fund.
New Profit and America Forward applaud the appointment of Damian Thorman as Director of the Corporation for National and Community Service’s Social Innovation Fund (SIF).
This appointment reaffirms the Obama Administration’s commitment to supporting innovative approaches to addressing our nation’s most pressing social problems. In Mr. Thorman, the Administration has chosen a visionary and highly capable leader whom many at New Profit had the pleasure of working with closely during his time at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, in a shared effort to catalyze innovation at the intersection of philanthropy, government and social entrepreneurship.
New Profit and America Forward are proud to have supported the development and authorization of the SIF. New Profit’s Pathways Fund was part of the original cohort of SIF grantees in 2009, and over the last six years has worked with an amazing group of organizations to strengthen the bridge between education and workforce development to foster opportunity and access for low-income youth. More recently, America Forward also became a sub-grantee of SIF‘s Pay for Success program.
Through these initiatives and other work, we continue to lift up the critical role that the SIF plays supporting the expansion of high-impact nonprofits in communities across the country. The SIF brings innovators from multiple sectors together to develop solutions to some of America’s most pressing challenges. Given his background in building cross-sector partnerships and fostering collective action, Mr. Thorman an ideal choice to lead the SIF. We look forward to working with him.
