Jumpstart engages caring, civic-minded college students and older adults in service to work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Through a proven, innovative program featuring intensive one-to-one adult-child interaction for an entire school year, Jumpstart’s 3,100 corps members help more than 12,000 pre-school children annually in Head Start and other early learning programs build language and literacy, social, and initiative skills that provide the necessary groundwork for future academic and social success.

Results

  • During the 2005–06 school year, Jumpstart children (on average, across the national network) improved their skills by 26 percent, significantly greater than a comparison group.
  • Jumpstart has increased the overall number of adults serving low-income preschoolers by five percent nationwide, with an even more dramatic increase of 70 percent in several cities, including Boston and San Francisco.
