Headquarters: New York, NY | Founded: 1999 | www.cfy.org

Computers for Youth (CFY) believes that the home holds the greatest untapped potential for improving children’s academic and life-long success. CFY partners with schools to improve the educational resources in students’ homes (their computer-based home learning centers are designed by software experts and tested by students and education executives from around the country), enhance parent-child interaction around learning (CFY’s workshops turn “family time” into “learning time”), and help teachers connect learning with the classroom. In 2007, CFY will serve its 10,000th family. By 2010, CFY will establish three offices in addition to New York and Philadelphia, and work with affiliates nationwide.

Results

  • A preliminary analysis of test score data shows impact on academic achievement, and a comparison study with non-participating students shows increases in class effort (as measured by teachers).
  • More than 90 percent of participating parents say they feel more confident in helping their children learn.
