Citizen Schools is setting a new standard for after-school time with a creative and effective learning model—apprenticeships with citizen teachers—that addresses community needs while building student skills through hands-on experiential learning activities. Citizen Schools’ national network of 38 school campus sites connects more than 3,800 middle school students with more than 2,800 adult volunteers in hands-on learning to help students develop the academic and leadership skills they need to do well in school, get into college, and become leaders in their careers and in their communities.

Results

  • A recent independent evaluation found that students participating in Citizen Schools’ programs run at Boston public middle schools are getting better math and English grades; have higher attendance and lower suspension rates; and are performing better in ninth grade English and math compared to a matched group.
  • In a longitudinal study, 72 percent of eighth graders in Citizen Schools were accepted to, and enrolled in, college-track high schools, compared to just 32 percent of their non-participating peers.
