Using entrepreneurship as incentive, BUILD empowers youth from under-resourced communities to excel in education, lead in their communities, and succeed professionally. BUILD reaches students who may lack interest in school but who see business as a way to improve their lives. Through an in-school and after-school elective taught between 9th and 12th grades, BUILD teaches entrepreneurial skills to savvy, inner-city youth who need a “real-world” experience to attract and hold their interest. BUILD engages university students, young professionals, venture capitalists, and community volunteers to help students plan, launch, and operate small businesses.

Results

  • Students in BUILD’s freshman year program show a 128 percent score increase on a business knowledge exam administered in the first month of the class.
  • One hundred percent of BUILD graduates have graduated from high school and gone on to college attending schools such as Columbia, Emory, Harvard, San Francisco State, San Jose State, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, and Wesleyan. Eighty percent are the first in their family to go to college, and 95 percent remain in college.
