Be the Change, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to re-imagining American democracy for the 21st century. Inspired by the belief that America needs a new agenda, a new politics, and a new role for government, Be the Change seeks to create a more idealistic and vibrant democracy in which citizens, and citizen action, are at the center of politics and policy making.
Be the Change focuses on three core missions:
- Crafting a bold and innovative policy agenda rooted in the practical experience of social entrepreneurs that sets a pragmatic, ten-year time horizon for major systemic change. Initial policy initiatives include reinventing America’s system of public education and creating a system of universal, voluntary national service. Future policy initiatives include the environment, youth policy, electoral reform, and global poverty.
- Building a broad-based, traditional grassroots and web-fueled citizens’ movement that will campaign for better public policies, promote active citizenship, and give frustrated Americans a place to channel their activism.
- Partnering with and investing seed money in advocacy venture capital start-ups that share our ideals and help us build coalitions to support an agenda for change. Be the Change has already helped raise seed money for one startup, ServeNext.org, which promotes national service.
