Take three minutes and help YouthBuild call for a decisive expansion of its programs and national service over the coming decade by adding your name to Sign On Letters to both Presidential candidates. As YouthBuild President and Founder Dorothy Stoneman explained in an email last week, both candidates need to be reminded to keep the engagement of low-income youth on the agenda especially in this time of economic crisis.
"As you may know, YouthBuild programs turn away thousands of young people each year for lack of funds. Most have no other place to turn. Barack Obama has included steadily expanding YouthBuild over eight years to 50,000 youth per year in 850 communities in his comprehensive national service platform. Senator Obama has also just joined Senators Kennedy and Hatch, to co-sponsor a bill called the Serve America Act to expand opportunities for national service for all sectors of the population to help solve key issues facing the nation. We need Senator Obama to know that there is a strong constituency for his YouthBuild expansion plan as well as the Serve America bill. Senator McCain also co-sponsored the Serve America Act. However, his platform does not include YouthBuild. We need to bring YouthBuild to Senator McCain’s attention, while thanking him for supporting the Serve America Act."
