There is definitely something brewing in this country when Al Sharpton gets a standing ovation at the Republican convention. But it happened – we saw it! And it gets better – this very special event was sponsored by Newt Gingrich’s organization American Solutions for Winning the Future. Yep, you read that right—Al Sharpton got a standing ovation at an event sponsored by Newt Gingrich. And what’s more? It was an Education event, with people from both parties agreeing on the same principles for education reform. Incredible!
Also sponsored by America Forward organizations College Summit and NewSchools Venture Fund, along with many other organizations, this education event was an incredible testament to the growing support for social entrepreneurs and for the America Forward principles of innovation, accountability and results when approaching our nation’s toughest problems. Al Sharpton, Newt Gingrich, former Colorado Governor Roy Romer, Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, McCain Policy Advisor and former Arizona Education Secretary Lisa Graham Keegan, Minnesota Governor Pawlenty and many others spoke about the need for more innovation, entrepreneurship, accountability and results in education. Governor Pawlenty said “Nobody has brought fundamental change to scale in America. We should stop starting new nonprofits and get the ones we have to start to work.” Secretary Spellings highlighted the great work of social entrepreneur organizations such as Teach For America and KIPP, saying these types of innovations should be "systemic and folded in at full force."
It is incredibly exciting to see such support for the education entrepreneurs, to see a call for more innovation, accountability and results in the education system, and to hear such strong support to bring the best ideas to scale. What an incredible event!
