Amid all the pageantry, excitement and confetti of the Democratic National Convention, it’s easy to overlook the fact that, in addition to nominating the party’s candidates for President and Vice President, the purpose of the Convention is also to adopt the party’s platform. But as the pomp and circumstance has subsided in Denver, Democrats emerge with a complete party platform – and America Forward is proud to report that the platform highlights the work of social entrepreneurs and pledges support for their innovative, results-driven ideas!

As you likely already know, America Forward is committed to supporting and fostering our nation’s social entrepreneurs as they find effective, innovative solutions to solve our country’s problems. The Democratic Party has included this mission in its 2008 party platform. The relevant text reads as follows:

Partnership with Civic Institutions
Social entrepreneurs and leading nonprofit organizations are assisting schools, lifting families out of poverty, filling health care gaps, and inspiring others to lead change in their own communities. To support these results-oriented innovators, we will create a Social Investment Fund Network that invests in ideas that work, tests their impact, and expands the most successful programs. We will create an office to coordinate government and nonprofit efforts.

At America Forward, we’re thrilled to see this language included in the platform. It’s the culmination of months of work with party officials and others, and it shows a growing recognition of the impact social entrepreneurs are having in our communities. But our work doesn’t stop there. We’re looking towards Minneapolis next week to encourage the Republicans to include similar language in their platform. Come January, we hope to work with the administration to implement ideas that can truly support innovative social entrepreneurs on the national level.
